We had a blast several years ago getting to create the first ever chocolate Neopets Advent Calendar, and we’re excited to be making a new and improved one this year. We have a strong philosophy of working hard to perpetually improve the quality of our products over time. and the calendars we made in 2020 left room for improvement, so we wanted to address some questions and feedback, as well as cover improvements we’ve made in making this year’s calendar.

  • When we initially produced the 2020 Advent calendar, we had approximately 5 weeks from start to finish for the entire project, including all development and production, which severely limited our options for producing items to our usual high standards.
  • Christmas 2020 also marked the first year of COVID, so many commercial kitchens were following strict COVID guidelines, many were closed outright, and space was largely unavailable for our project, slowing production.
  • Because of the increased reliance on online purchasing, the post office became far more congested than usual, so many orders shipped out were delayed from reaching their recipients in time.
  • A small handful of customers received chocolates that had acquired a bit of an odor and taste in transit, the result of sitting in USPS warehouses for several weeks in poor conditions.

We’ve made vast changes in the process, packaging, and procedures for this year. Given the advance start of the project, we’ve had plenty of time to prepare and to improve on what we learned from doing Advent Calendars previously.

  • Each chocolate is being molded directly in formed plastic trays, saving both time and improving presentation
  • We’ve partnered with a candy kitchen for production
  • Each package will be shrink wrapped to ensure freshness.
  • We’ve chosen a different brand of higher-end chocolate melt wafers for casting.

Candy melts are a form of chocolate wafer that are perfect for melting and casting into molded shapes – you’ve doubtless had many of them over the years in other chocolate products. They don’t require tempering (reheating and cooling), conform well to mold shapes, and have a very high shelf-life. They are easy to handle, and we observe all proper safety, storage, and food handling procedures when working with food products. They can occasionally produce “chocolate bloom” from the ingredients separately slightly during the cooling process, usually on the surface. While bloom can look unusual, it doesn’t typically impact the taste or the safety in the slightest.

While Advent calendars are not traditionally made using particularly high-end chocolate, we strive to source the best we can to ensure the best taste and experience. These calendars are produced in limited quantities, and we keep a constant eye out for quality and any issues that might arise.

I chose the picture above because it shows how much fun you can have in a last minute costume. My Freddie Mercury costume was basically a white tank top, a piece of carpet glued to my upper lip and a studded armband. Vibeke’s Poison Ivy literally contained leaves and branches torn out of our front yard an hour earlier. We made a lot out of very little and it was a great time.

That being said, it’s a lot easier to feel awesome in a good costume

Above and beyond having a costume that looks good, it’s nice to have pieces of it that will not only survive one event, but last for years to come. Not only because you can reuse them for future costumes, but because some pieces are just plain cool to wear any time. Way back in high school, someone I dated and I had Squall and Rinoa’s rings from Final Fantasy VIII. I think I wore that around my neck the entire time that relationship lasted and possibly longer. It’s just cool to wear a little piece of your fandom along with any outfit, for any occasion.

We at Geekify can help with that! In addition to all the recognizable things from movies, games, books and comics http://xanaxonlinebuy.com that you see on our store, we make custom things of all descriptions. Whether it’s a customized version of something that already exists, or something from your own original character, we can make it a reality. You may be tempted to just build it out of cardboard or foam and spray paint it. While that may look good for one event or two, we can make you something worth putting on your wall when you aren’t wearing it.

Even if you are having trouble with just one very difficult component, we have the tools to overcome those challenges. With a workshop full of equipment and some very talented people, we can do everything from costume pieces to hand-held props. Jewelry and accessories are right up our alley too! We may even have some suggestions you hadn’t thought of, or thought were way too audacious to attempt.

Having the perfect costume can make you feel like the star of your next convention, whether you win the costume contest or not. Even if nobody knows who your original character is, you will have the satisfaction of knowing you got the crown just right. We’ll recognize you at least and you can pose for a photo with me anytime

Ah 2010, I remember it like it was yesterday. Minecraft was in beta, Braid and Limbo were winning awards. It seemed like the future held no limits for indie games. If studios of one or a few people could create such wonders, what would come next? The answer was Kickstarter, IndieGoGo, Steam Greenlight and Early Access. The future was now and we were getting directly involved with the development of these games, even getting to know the developers as individuals.

Then at some point, as inevitably happens, reality caught up with us. Those indie developers started to get caught up in the churning maelstrom of marketing and publishing across multiple platforms. Kickstarter campaigns falling behind or disappearing without a trace became so common, memes developed left and right. What’s even worse, almost every project that involved a legendary studio or creator breaking away from a big publisher went down in flames. By the beginning of last year, it seemed that indie development was truly a fad. Journalists jumped over one another to declare it dying or dead.

Then something magical started to happen.

That “invisible market correcting arm” nonsense actually worked for once and a new publishing model started to emerge. Companies with no track record of publishing games, started looking into ways to create a new paradigm. Facebook suddenly had a gaming service. Gamestop was publishing indie games, playable in your web browser. Most unexpected of all, limited runs of physical collector’s editions became a popular trend in indie games. This is where we come in. Suddenly, creators of collectible merchandise like LootCrate, ThinkGeek and us here at Geekify in sunny Broomfield, CO, were not only making posters and keychains, but also printing game discs and cases. We became game publishers in the most unlikely way.

This is just the kind of new market shift that can create incredible innovation. Traditional publishers are very top heavy in comparison to indie developers. It just doesn’t make sense to spend millions and employ 50 marketers, to promote a game developed by ten people for thousands of dollars. It also doesn’t make sense to over-monetize indie games, trying to milk DLCs and quick sequels out of them. Indie games generally thrive on their audacity and originality, so that model immediately kills their internet street cred. Microsoft may have pulled it off once with Minecraft, but they also kind of broke the mold for anyone else’s use. Consumers are now extremely leery of games that turn into 0 games. So blowing a pile of money on marketing, http://onhealthy.net hoping to make it back with further DLC, is not such a viable scheme anymore.

Fortunately, digital publishing has become extremely low-entry on most platforms. Almost anyone can manage to get a game on Steam and Sony has made great strides to reduce the barriers on their PSN as well. Even Microsoft and Apple, traditionally the slowest and most difficult to publish on, have made their application processes easier. Nintendo is still Nintendo, but they are at least giving us a little hope these days.

With this process no longer requiring a long and costly negotiation, the role of the publisher can be much simpler. If no further negotiations are required, it really comes down to marketing and the production of any physical copies. With indie games, physical copies are generally very limited-run and packaged with lots of goodies. So why not just cut out the middle men and have the companies that make that stuff do it all?

After all, none of those corporate suits are as hip as we are. We’re already at the conventions where you want to show off your game. The streamers and services that you would want to promote you, are often already our customers. We don’t see your game as something to profit from or a piece for our portfolio, we want you to make it so we can play it! Most of all we can do it cheaper, faster and more grassroots than those big bloated dinosaurs. The biggest contributor to the problems I listed above is studios running out of money, because they spent it on marketing and publishing costs. With smaller, more agile and younger companies stepping into the market void, we can start to change that.

Here at Geekify Inc, we’re aiming to be right at the center of this. Not only are we establishing relationships with developers of the games currently in progress, we are thinking and planning for the healthy indie game industry of tomorrow. We have a few projects down the pipeline to revolutionize licensing and publishing for you, the little guy. Because our goal is for you to create the things we all want to play. We want you to stay creative and keep developing, not get beaten down by the corporate game machine and go start your own brewery in Timbuktu instead.

So keep your eyes on our blog and social media accounts in the coming months, for updates on this exciting new development. Our partnerships in Kickstarter fulfillment are just the first step into a larger world.

I think it’s a commonality we can all share as geeks, that each of us has fandoms and fantasy worlds that are as real to us as the one we live in. When we were children, a stick was a lightsaber and Wonder Woman’s invisible jet was always ready to be conjured by the imagination. As we grow older, our imaginations tend to dull a bit and sticks turn into debris to be cleared from the yard. The emotions and the desire to return the that place of magic however, stay with us for life.

You may be realizing where this is going, as I am clearly a man who sells merchandise capitalizing on those very feelings. I make no effort to hide it. Let’s move beyond that relationship, so I can tell you what nostalgia means to me and why I think it’s the best investment. I’d like to begin by talking about how we access that nostalgia.

Many of the keys to our memories are lost to us as our brains age, moving out of our control to recall. Smells have a powerful ability to jog memory, but how can one seek out a smell that will help them remember something lost to time? Taste is a powerful gateway to memory, but nothing ever tastes the same as the first time you loved it. Sounds and sights are important, but our ability to use them to access lost joys diminishes as those senses fail.

This leaves us with touch (and ESP of course). I don’t want to diminish the struggle of those who have lost feeling in their bodies, but for the vast majority of us, touch remains a strong link to memory long after the other senses become dull. We keep trinkets and mementos that we hold in our hands while thinking of days long gone. The old walking stick that crossed many mountains. The old hammer that built the home your children grew up in. That first protractor that started your design career. We tend to hold on to these things, as mementos to help us recall those glory days.

But where is the memento from when you and the neighbor kids were the fellowship of the ring and went to Mordor in the empty lot, to save Middle Earth? Where is your medal, who your sister, Princess Leia gave you when you and your dog Chewbacca blew up the Death Star in the laundry room? You don’t have them anymore. The stick that was Sting is long gone and the paper medal was thrown out when you went to college. The real ones are in Bilbo’s study, inside a fantasy world that you can only access by reading the book again for the umpteenth time…

It need not be so.

In this age of wonders, it is a small task to recreate those items. Not as sticks and paper medals, but as they http://www.onlinepharmacytabs.com were in your imagination. As they appeared on your old 13” TV or as they were described on the page. So that when you hold the red book of Westmarch in your hand, it isn’t the crayon-drawn map that you and the neighbor child brought back. It’s the true article, with all the weight and feel that your childhood imagination could conjure.

Because you too will want to share those memories with your children and grandchildren. Not only the memories of your childhood adventures, but also the stories that inspired your imagination. How better than from a book just like the ones the characters have in their world? How better than while they clutch the holy symbol in their little hands, the same one that allowed the hero to cross the magical barrier?

It is true that material possessions and trinkets are fleeting and temporary. The memories they can access however, are one of the greatest joys we can experience in our lives.

I feel that the curation of that nostalgia is a sacred task. Those memories created people who now solve the world’s problems, with the lessons they learned from those childhood heroes. While you may have your skills or the adult decisions you have made to thank for where you are in your life, it was those trips to Mordor that made you the person you are today. Remembering that and passing that sacred mythology down to the next generation is as important to me as the preservation of science and culture.

Because that’s truly what it is to us; our mythology. I did not learn right and wrong from the very confusing Old Testament stories the pastor read in Sunday School as a child. I learned it from Samwise Gamgee, a gardener with the courage to storm Cirith Ungol single-handedly. I learned it from Master Yoda, who showed me that the oldest and weakest of us have the greatest power of all: wisdom. I learned it from Captain Picard, who taught me that all creatures have the right to their own experience, even if we cannot understand it.

Most of all I learned from my parents, who shared these stories with me that were so influential to them. That is what nostalgia means to me. The preservation of that which made us who we are and the way we communicate that to all who could learn from us.

Does a trinket represent that? Absolutely it can, if it was made with this philosophy. Objects can have as much or as little meaning as we imbue them with. Wars have been started over carvings of cows and symbols of gods have brought crowds to their knees. Objects have  a very powerful effect on our thoughts and feelings and I believe it is truly noble for the most beautiful of our trinkets to represent the best of our thoughts and feelings.

Bound to Be Awesome

Our journey here at Geekify really started with one item, the Neverending Story eReader cover. The remnants of a leather armor project got turned into the first ever Neverending Story for John’s Kindle. What started as a fun idea very quickly became a creative endeavor that many of our fans wanted to have a piece of, and for good reason. There are so many of us who watched the Neverending Story in our younger days and went on the journey alongside Atreyu and Bastian. That sort of wonder and the lessons imparted by the characters managed to stay with us well into our adult years, so it was a natural progression for us to end up creating something so close to the film we love. Handbound and crafted custom each time by our artisans, each and every book has an insane amount of love worked into it. Each book or cover is a small tribute to the film that we send off to a fan, that connects us all in some strange way. For us, it’s a really cool feeling every time we get an order to know that we are part of a massive community of people who have a deep love and respect for creations forged by like-minded geniuses.

Thus, we started expanding our leatherbounds to include more and more of the worlds we love, such as our Hocus Pocus book replica, and the Handbook for the Recently Deceased from the always offbeat Beetlejuice. Each book is unique and comes with it’s own challenges to recreate that have to be considered when we embark upon creating them. For example, did you know there’s more than one way to bind a book? There are many, in fact: saddlestitching, longstitching, coptic binding, perfect binding, etc.  Each one has its advantages, but in the realm of making fantastical books, more often than not we are tasked with re-engineering old and new bookmaking techniques to make the imaginary become reality. That’s where the true geekery of our creative talents come in, and we find new ways to bring to life what movies, TV, and games http://phentermine-med.com manage to do, but in a fully realized and long-lasting form.

This blog is the first in a series to see a few of the steps involved with crafting our books. We wanted to give our fans an inside look into the journey each book makes to come to fruition and the kind of skill that our artisans take to make each one special.

In the Workshop

In the process of making books, we make pre-lined kits so that each book is perfect to specification as we craft them.

Our resident crafting genius, Chase, creates many of the design elements that grace the covers of the books. Hard at work as always.

Each book takes a number of special tools and time in order to complete.

Cody hand cuts each cover page to be laid down and finalized into the cover of the book she’s working on.

It’s not uncommon to find piles of fabrics on every surface in the workshop. Each piece is carefully selected and hand cut to fit the specific book or cover size.

We use this massive, ancient West German Paper Shearer (circa 1979) to cut the boards we use to assemble books. Able to cut through a phone book in a single blow, it is both incredibly fun and potentially dangerous…which it probably what makes it fun for us.

This is just a quick peek into the daily life of crafting books here at Geekify Inc. The process of designing, creating, and crafting each book is long and arduous, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. We’re incredibly lucky to be able to spend our time making things that we love, and that our fans love as well. Stay tuned for future blogs where we’ll cover many of the different types of manufacturing that we do! Our next production blog is going to be an inside look into the process of selecting the materials used in our production.

Until next time, stay geeky friends.
